Adler moved around the kitchen like he’d been in it before. He went straight to the coffee cups, started the coffee pot without a second thought, and filled them both a mug.

When he sat down, Ringwald came bouncing into the room and straight to Adler instead of her, kissing and licking his face, jumping up on him. Her suspicion was confirmed.

“Ringwald doesn’t do well with strangers, so unless you’ve got a steak in your pocket, you’ve been to the farm before and were here long enough to make friends with the dog,” she said accusingly.

“I have, and I’ll explain when Oscar arrives.”

“How is it that you know Oscar? Did you do business with Harlon Wilson before he died?”

“The Wilson Foundation has helped many people throughout the years, including me. We have a history. Wilson was an interesting man and how you came to be the new foundation owner was surprising.”

She took a sip of her coffee, watching him. “He was an interesting man.”

“I thought you didn’t know him. You only showed up at the funeral.”

“Doesn’t mean he didn’t haunt me. Speaking of funerals, if you knew Wilson and know Oscar, then why didn’t you show up out of respect for Wilson’s funeral?”

“If you have to ask that question, then you didn’t know him very well,” Adler answered.

“Ryley?” Oscar hollered when the front door opened.

“In the kitchen,” she answered back.

Oscar hurried into the room and, out of breath, dropped the bags of groceries on the counter. “Are you okay? Were you hurt?”

“Did you know Adler had a security detail following me?” she blurted out without pleasantries while watching Oscar and Adler completely ignore each other.

“Yes,” Oscar answered. “Adler informed me of his plans, but only after Pete’s house. His detail was watching you, and the man was hurt by an unknown assailant requiring several stitches.”

Ryley’s mouth parted as she stared from one man to the other. “What do you mean he was watching me at Pete’s house?”

“Adler put a tail on you for protection. He thought it wise since someone killed the reporter. He didn’t want you to succumb to the same fate.”

“How come you didn’t tell me all this when I woke up?”

“I didn’t want to scare you. I was going to tell you tonight. I was going to explain everything over dinner.”

“Sounds like a marvelous idea, and I can’t wait to hear this,” Adler said, standing from his seat. He moved to the bags and pulled out the food.

“You’re not invited,” Oscar said, turning his gaze to Adler.

Ryley’s phone rang while the two argued. A glance at the caller ID made her hesitate before she answered. Glancing at the two of them, she stepped out of the kitchen.

“Hey there,” she said, as if she were talking to a friend and not a detective. In a way, she kind of was.

“Ryley, are you okay?” Detective Crews asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m sorry your name got dragged into the questioning.” Ryley walked to the window in the living room. Peeking through the curtain, she scanned the yard and then lifted her gaze to the sky.
